Monthly Inspiration: November 2016
When was the last time you took at least 20 minutes to completely relax without stimulation or any other distraction while the body is put into a specific yoga pose held by blankets, blocks, straps and bolsters? This is Restorative Yoga. According to an article in Psychology Today, the stress hormone cortisol is public health enemy number one. Scientists have known for years that elevated cortisol levels: interfere with learning and memory, lowers immune function and bone density, increases weight gain, blood pressure, cholesterol and heart disease, and the list goes on and on. The truth is every one of us could benefit from a passive practice. In this culture we are not taught to value relaxation. Any activity that causes stimulation is not true relaxation. 2 hours on the couch watching TV with all the suspense and snippets of constant interruption projected over unnatural blue light is highly activating. In addition we have a phenomenon of digital addiction through social media and technology happening. It is important to find the time to unplug our brains! When musculature is fully and safely supported by the props and all the other variables are in place such as,10-20 minutes with warmth, quiet, stillness & darkness. Only then the body/mind is given the message that it is ok to let go of deeply held tension. This is where deep healing takes place, in the parasympathetic nervous system.
BENEFITS include increased concentration and mental clarity, improved memory, supports immune function, release of stress, regulates blood pressure, headache relief, reduction of depression and anxiety, supports recovery from illness, regulates blood pressure, reduces fatigue and brings sound sleep.
Restorative Yoga has been described as an exploration of the capacity of individual students to relax deeply, to understand their bodies and minds more intimately and to open their hearts more fully to love.
As you lay in a supported Restorative Pose Maria Maire will play a sequence of quartz crystal singing bowls, each one keyed to the energy centers (chakras) of the body, where sound nourishes the nervous system. The results are waves of peace, heightened awareness, and relaxation of the mind, body and spirit.
A Sound Bath can be an unforgettable sound experience for those who seek deep relaxation, rejuvenation and an acceleration of their inward journey. Time is suspended as you enter a world of vibration, sensation and experience. Physical injuries can be healed and old emotional traumas released. Great insights can be accessed. You feel truly, vibrantly alive. Once you’ve had your first Sound Bath you’ll want more.
Imagine being immersed in beautiful sounds that are healing to your body, mind and soul as essential oils specifically blended by Roey for relaxation enter through the Olfactory center to the Limbic Brain affecting emotion & memory. You will dive into a space of deep peace as you enter into your parasympathetic NS, the place where deep healing takes place.
Maria and I will create this Restorative Sound Bath experience in the serene space of Kamadeva Yoga studio to bring you to relaxation at a profound level. This will help your body to find its natural balance while creating space for insights. People often find resolution for emotional issues and a sense of coming home to themselves.
All this being said being still for a period of time without distractions is not easy for most people. Restlessness, worry and boredom can sneak in. Underneath maybe unwanted emotions lurking around that we do not want to feel or face. How do we to give ourselves the opportunity and the permission to unplug, to pause and move from doing into just being our true unfettered selves. Not easy, there will be resistance. What we resist the most is usually what we need the most... I can’t remember who said that but it’s so true. How do we touch the essence of who we are without our roles, responsibilities and struggles? Like anything else it takes practice. It helps to be guided into it will happen in this workshop. Of course we all value our active yoga practice and other exercise but there are days I decide a passive practice is needed. Maybe 20 minutes in 2 poses on props. Less is more as my teacher used to say. I do feel the radical difference when I take this pause for myself. It helps me to become much more present and receptive to myself which then transfers to those around me. In addition, learning the “Art of Relaxation” is like working a muscle. We can relax more easily when we have paved the way for the relaxation to enter.
Join Maria & myself on November 11, Friday 6:30-9:00 for a magical experience. This workshop is for all levels. Please sign up soon to reserve your spot. Bring a small towel and eye bag if possible.
