CBD For ADHD/ADD (The Science)

CBD For ADHD/ADD What Does Science Say

If you just do even a short Google search on ADHD and CBD, you’ll find that there is a whole host of anecdotal evidence that point to it being an effective, natural remedy. The only issue with these is that they’re nothing more than that – stories.

They won’t hold up in court, and they can’t be used as scientific evidence that CBD oil is an effective treatment for ADHD. Of course, what we need is evidence that has been backed by science.

In this article, we’re going to take a look at some of the research that is out there that links CBD up to ADHD.

Let’s get going and answer all your questions about this topic.

CBD and ADHD: The Evidence

ADHD

As a disclaimer, so far there haven’t been any large clinical trials in this particular field. Like we’ve already said, the vast majority of evidence lies in the testimonies and stories that people have posted and shared online that describe their personal experience with CBD and ADHD.

One major reason for this is that CBD is still a shaky subject when it comes to a lot of American states. While it is legal to grow industrial hemp in every state at a federal level, there are still states that are reluctant to loosen state legislation around CBD and cannabis.

In 2008, a case study was done on a 28-year-old individual. This individual had many traffic violations, partly as a result of their issues with ADHD. When they were given a strong dose of CBD, the results were impressive – they were able to show signs of ADHD regulation that brought their symptoms down significantly.

Additionally, it was stated that the CBD also had a positive impact on their ability to drive, too.

A study published in 2016 actually took a look at the anecdotal evidence online through forums to get a better idea of the use and prevalence of CBD. Of the 401 posts observed, it was concluded that 25% of them considered CBD to be an effective remedy against ADHD.

In 2017, a publication was produced that talked about Sativex, a prescription medication for ADHD patients that included cannabis in its ingredients.

Among the group of fifteen participants that were given a dose, it was found that they experienced considerable improvements in hyperactivity, impulsivity, and inattention.

However, it’s important to note with this one that because Sativex is a prescription medication, it still comes with adverse side effects.

CBD and ADHD Continued

These three studies represent the core of the research that has been done around CBD and ADHD. It is said that CBD can help treat ADHD by increasing your levels and availability of dopamine, which is virtually what prescription medication like Ritalin does, except without the harmful chemicals that come with their own issues.

This implies that a significant cause of ADHD is a dopamine deficiency. With this in mind, it’s considered that regular CBD dosing could help to regulate dopamine levels in patients who suffer from ADHD.

While this information is nothing more than speculation, the potential for CBD to be an effective treatment for a health condition like this is certainly promising.

CBD and ADHD: Is It Safe for Kids?

ADHD Kids

As you may have guessed, another important question to ask when considering CBD for ADHD is: is it safe for children?

The World Health Organization says that CBD is ‘generally well tolerated’ with a ‘good safety profile.’ We have certainly seen other publications that point to CBD being an effective treatment in childhood epilepsy, so while we’re not medical professionals and cannot give out medical advice, we would point to this proof as something to consider when opting for a natural remedy like CBD for your child and their ADHD.

Final Thoughts

It’s important for us to emphasize once again that currently, there are no large scale clinical trials currently being carried out that look into the effects of CBD on health conditions like ADHD and ADD. As a result, we cannot make any conclusive claims about the effectiveness of CBD in relation to this topic.

However, it’s important to consider the studies we’ve mentioned above, as well as the wealth of anecdotal evidence out there among online forums. It certainly appears that there is a link between the receptors in the brain responsible for regulating a condition like ADHD and how CBD interacts with the body.

While scientists, researchers, and doctors still have a long way to go to figure out exactly how CBD is beneficial for ADHD, it could very well become clear in the future that CBD is an excellent option that is safe for both children and adults.
