How to Make CBD Oil with Olive Oil

How to Make CBD Oil with Olive Oil

These days, there’s no limit to the number of companies around the world selling CBD oil products in different forms. With so many different products to choose from, it seems silly to want to try and make it yourself.

However, there are many different benefits to making something yourself, including the satisfaction of having made it with your own hands. Whether it’s the freedom to choose exactly which ingredients you decide to include, or having complete control over the entire process, there are many people out there that just enjoy doing things themselves.

The beauty of this type of product is that you can actually make it at home by yourself without having to worry about how it compares to industrial production. The best part is that you get the final say over what the end result looks like. Let’s take a look at how to make your very own CBD oil.

How to Make CBD Oil

When you make CBD oil on a commercial level, it’s not surprising that the process is complex and the profit margins are incredibly thin. Luckily for you, you don’t have to worry about this kind of stuff, because you’re going to make it from home.

This means that it’s okay if the final product isn’t perfect or if the ingredients cost a little more – because you’ll have the satisfaction of having done it all by yourself. However, it always helps to know how it gets done commercially so that you can get a rough idea of what you’re trying to replicate when you embark on the journey yourself.

One of the most popular ways to extract CBD oil from the plant is by using the CO2 method. This means that they use CBD from cannabis using CO2, which means they can also completely remove any other cannabinoids that they don’t want to be in their final product while they’re at it. The finished result of this process is then preserved in an oil solution of their choice.

However, because you’re not working within strict rules and regulations, you’re not going to need to employ a method that’s on this scale. Instead, you can recruit older methods that have been tested many times over and approved for the small time – like, for example, a pan.

Let’s not get ahead of ourselves here, though. Before you begin making your CBD oil, you’ll need to decide which oil you want to pair it with. Because we’ve decided to talk about olive oil today, let’s take a look at why olive oil is an excellent choice when making your very own CBD oil from home.

Why Olive Oil?

Olive Oil

The beauty of this natural remedy is that it can be made out of virtually any oil you like. With this in mind, though, it’s important to remember that changing up the type of oil you use to make it is going to determine the texture, quality, and taste at the end of it all.

These are some of the reasons why olive oil is a great choice – mainly because of the flavor you’ll get. A lot of the time CBD oil has such a distinct flavor that it’s going to overpower anything you combine it with, which is why olive oil is a good choice.

Of course, we all know that olive oil has been a safe go-to choice for general cooking for centuries now, which means that it can fit in nicely with the final product that you’re looking for, something that other oils aren’t going to be able to pull off as well.

Without further ado, let’s take a look at the process of creating your own CBD oil with olive oil.

How to Prepare Your Bud

When making high-quality CBD oil from home, you’ll want to make it from real cannabis buds. If you’re not too fussed about the concentration of CBD, then you can use any strain of cannabis without it really making too much of a difference.

However, if you want to guarantee that your final product is CBD oil, then you’ll want to take careful note of what cannabis variety you’re using.

It’s essential to buy a strain of cannabis that’s got a high level of CBD. As a bonus, if you choose a bud that’s got little to no traces of THC in it, then there’s no chance of you accidentally getting a high from it, either.

The first step to preparing your bud correctly is to either grind it down into an incredibly fine powder or to decarboxylate it. The biggest reason for this step is because our bodies struggle to absorb most of the common cannabinoids unless they’ve been adequately decarboxylated. All this means is that they’ve been heated to the right temperature.

When you smoke cannabis, the heat from the smoke does this process automatically. When you are preparing and cooking it, then this step needs to be done by you manually.

All you need to do in order to make sure your bud is correctly decarboxylated is place it on an oven tray and cook it at 250 F for approximately twenty to thirty minutes.

If you’re guessing by looking at it, then you want your bud to be ever so slightly browned and crispy. You don’t want to completely cook your bud or burn it.

If you don’t like the idea of doing this, there is the alternative of just grinding it down into a really really fine powder. The finer the powder, the easier it is for the cannabinoids in your bud to come out and connect with the heat in the oil later on in the CBD creating process, but bear in mind that you’ve skipped the decarboxylating step so you need to make sure it’s as fine as you can get it.

Steep Your Cannabis in Oil

The actual method of making CBD oil is pleasantly simple – but first, you’ve got to decide what type of olive oil you’d like to use the most.

While extra virgin olive oil is the most expensive, it’s also going to have the nicest taste. However, it’s worth noting that the taste can change to be a little bitter if you cook it at too high of a temperature.

If you’ve got a stovetop that gets hot quick, you may want to avoid using extra virgin olive oil. As an alternative, you can try high-quality olive oil that’s not extra virgin.

Next, you create a half olive oil half water mixture in your pan. Add your CBD buds and be prepared to wait it out, because the next step can take some time.

Start the heat off at very low. Remember to stir continuously so that nothing sticks together. Slowly begin to increase the temperature of your stove top until you can see that the water within the mixture is starting to boil.

Once you’ve reached this heat, turn it down a bit until the water has reached a rolling boil. Tip: the perfect temperature to infuse CBD with olive oil is around 200 F.

You also need to know what is too hot, as well. As long as you don’t go over 300 F, you’ll be just fine. If your CBD buds get hotter than 300 F, the cannabinoids will begin to evaporate, which is what your olive oil is supposed to be doing instead.

Combining your olive oil with water at the beginning is a good idea because it helps separate the cannabis from the end product. Another reason is that it helps prevent the cannabis from burning.

All in all, you’ll want to cook your mixture for approximately thirty minutes until you can see that most of your water has evaporated and your cannabis has floated to the top. Once it looks like this, you can move on to the last step.

Cooling and Separating Your Mixture

Once your CBD oil has finished its job getting those cannabinoids out of the bud, you need to give the whole thing a chance to cool down. Once your mixture has reached room temperature, use a fine sieve to strain it into a clean container that can be sealed.

What you’ll now have is a container of olive oil enriched with CBD and some cannabinoid buds that are still warm. While most people choose to throw the leftover buds out, they can be used for flavor in a number of different recipes.

Seal your CBD oil container and place it in the fridge for at least two hours. Once the mixture has cooled down completely, the oil will harden and float to the surface with the water staying below. Simply hold the container firmly to grip the oil and drain the water from it.

Final Thoughts

CBD olive oil may sound complicated, but it’s not. All you need is a couple of different kitchen utensils, some patience and a decent amount of heat, and you’ve got yourself the recipe for commercial quality CBD oil.

Because sunlight can decrease the quality of your cannabinoids, it’s recommended that you keep your container stored in a cool, dark place, like the pantry. To take your daily dose, simply spoon out a little bit and swallow it.

If you want better absorption, you can try sticking it under your tongue and holding it there until it melts away. Tip: you can even cook with your CBD oil – remember that at the end of the day it’s oil, just like anything else you would use to prepare with.

It’s easier than you think to make your very own CBD oil at home with olive oil.

  1. This looks easy enough. It could be a fun activity although I don’t think I’ll completely stop buying CBD oil and just do it myself. Haha! And I didn’t see it mentioned in the recipe but what would be the best way to grind the cannabis buds? Can I use a coffee grinder?
